TERRY BANE, NORWICH ROUNDABOUTS and HIGHWAY DISPLAYS CAREER SEPTEMBER 1976 - APRIL 2020 Returning home to Norfolk from Study, Work and Qualifications at THE ROYAL GARDENS WINDSOR and Berkshire College of Agriculture/Horticulture, Burchetts Green, Maidenhead my career started at Norwich City Council in the Castle Gardens and Churchyards Team in the heart of Norwich under Foreman Sidney Lovewell, charge hand Frank Elvin with Keith Browse, Bob Myhill, Kenny Wilkinson, Gary Larke, Derek Joyce (Bo), Peter Fletcher was Area Manager.
One of my first jobs in September 1976 was to help clear summer bedding displays and floral containers, prepare the ground, digging in well rotted Farm Yard Manure and plant autumn bedding, mostly field grown wallflowers and bulbs (Tulips) at Castle Gardens, Castle Meadow, South African War Memorial and the 2 high profile Highway Displays at All Saints Green and Ber Street either side of what was Bonds (now John Lewis) I also help clear and plant up Saint Andrews, Saint Augustine's and Saint Peter Hungate Churchyards.
My younger brother John Bane later also worked at Castle Gardens under Sidney Lovewell, Frank Elvin and our school friend Gary Mutten for around 10 years until moving and working on the famous perennial borders at Waterloo Park and later Eaton Park, John worked 33 years for Norwich City Council, he sadly died too young in 2013 and greatly missed.
I have been planning to create this web page for some time spending the last 2 years going through my hundreds of thousands digital images, scanned photographs and media clippings from the period 1980 - 2020, I have hurried up a bit as I have been asked for some Roundabout photos for a historical article to be written and published in 2023.
I dedicate my photos and memories on this web page to my many friends, colleagues, gardeners and people who cared about Norwich Roundabout, Traffic Islands and Floral Containers along the highways and in the hope that one day Norwich's "Bootiful" Roundabouts Will Return and my photos and memories inspire to create new BIODIVERSE and Colourful Displays to give a "Feeling of Well Being" to Residents, Commuters and Visitors once again. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY PLANT PRODUCTION AT EARLHAM PARK NURSERY JUNE 1977 - APRIL 1990 One of my fist jobs at EARLHAM PARK NURSERY managed by Jack Baker was to weed nursery field grown wallflowers in the Nursery Field where the majority of 100,000 Autumn Bedding plants were grown, around 40,000 plants and 10,000 Tulip bulbs were planted each autumn in highway displays. Tulips were saved from highway and parks displays after flowering every May, taken back to Earlham Park Nursery, dried, cleaned up, planted, fed and grown on in the Nursery Field for future use.
120,000 Summer Bedding plants were grown each year in the greenhouses, cold frames, polythene and rokolene tunnels of which around 45,000 plants were planted each Summer in highway displays, at the end of the season in September some high value plants including Geranium Caroline Schmidt and Verbena bonariensis were saved for cuttings and others including Cannas potted on and overwintered under benches in cool greenhouses for future use.
In 1986 through Chris Dunn Parks Technical Officer I became a volunteer committee member and judged for The Norwich in Bloom Association, through Earlham Nursery I advised and supplied hanging baskets, troughs and planters to Norwich business as part of the Norwich in Bloom campaign, Chris encouraged Sponsorship of Roundabouts.
During my 12+ years at Earlham Park Nursery I was gardener, propagator, supervisor in 1983 and manager 1987-1990, I made many friends, John Attoe (City College Norwich now retired), Michael Denmark (Floranova now retired) and Ian Harris (owner of Hockering Nursery) John, Ian and Mike we worked as a Team helping Norwich in Bloom/Blooms for Norwich. many plants were produced free for community/volunteer projects, roundabout and highway displays at City College Norwich, Hockering Nursery and some at Floranova.
In 1987 I met Mirelle who also worked at Earlham Park Nursery, we were married in the Earlham Room registry office at City Hall in1989, Mirelle has quietly helped and supported me and Norwich in Bloom in so many ways during my career. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY DISPLAYS - GROUNDS MAINTENANCE CONTRACT TEAM JUNE 1990 - 1999 In June 1990 I became a Grounds Contract Inspector in a new Grounds Maintenance Contract Team at Elliot House, Ber Street under Contract Manager Ted Hamlin and Chris Dunn Contract Officer, I was one of 3 Contract Inspectors, my area was the City Centre and South of Norwich which involved monitoring Roundabout and highway displays.
in 1994 I was appointed as Horticultural Officer then based in Gladstone House, I was back to designing Roundabout and Highway Bedding Displays but this time contract ordering bedding plants from Red Hall Services, Leeds, Sperrinks Nursery, Newmarket and Peter Ward near Wisbech, sadly Earlham Park Nursery was closed and leased out. I ordered Tulips for roundabout and highway displays direct from suppliers mainly Lubbe Lisse (Holland)
Early in 1997 there was a problem with budgets, bedding plants could not be procured for the summer as an alternative I suggested and researched the use of Hardy Annuals as a quick fix to provide summer displays across the city.
By coincidence seed suppliers D.T. Brown were starting a trial of a new Dutch developed uniform height hardy annual mixture called Bohemian Rhapsody, I looked at the details and purchased 15 kilos of seed, all flower beds were prepared to a fine tilth during early April, the seed sown and raked in, germination took around 3 weeks developing into a green mat!
At the end of May every flower bed in Norwich looked weedy and uncared for, many letters of complaints were received. In early June every flower bed burst into sparkling colour, many letters and phone calls of compliment were received including national interest from the media and many local authorities wanting to know more about how to grow.
I also received much interest from Norwich businesses who wanted to sponsor the hardy annual flower beds. My manager Chris Dunn and I both took many photographs of the hardy annual displays asked for my the national media, the supplier also asked for the photos which I negotiated in exchange for supply of free seed for 1998. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY DISPLAYS - 1.9 MILLION BULBS PLANTED IN 1999 In 1999 during my last year with the Grounds Maintenance Contract Team, I ordered and organised one of my favourite initiatives that mostly continues to be seen every spring and should continue to be seen if managed are millions of bulbs including Crocus, Chinodoxa and Narcissi planted in highway verges.
The bulbs took 3 months to carefully plant especially amongst tree roots, 400,000 Crocus and Chinodoxa were planted along Newmarket Road, the millions of bulbs wowed Norwich residents, commuters and visitors, receiving many compliments and media attention including an interview by Anglia TV's Clare Weller with a very nervous Terry Bane.
The Millennium bulb displays sparked a great interest, for a few years I organised more bulb plantings along highways, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Purple 4 Polio awareness crocus plantings and many "Friends of Norwich in Bloom" Community plantings at Sheltered Housing Schemes with Schools pupils, parents and staff. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY DISPAYS - GREEN SPACES TEAM 1999 - 2006 In 1999 my role as Horticultural Officer continued first under manager George Ishmael then Bob Fell, I was lucky to stay in the same office with my friends Chris Dunn, Andrew Slaughter and Jeff Taylor, we all got on supporting each other through a difficult time of changes, regularly we took leave for days out watching planes and day return flights!
George Ishmael inspired me with his Prairie and New Wave Perennial designs used on many roundabouts and highway landscapes including Ber Street where I first met and developed a long sponsorship with Richard Marks. I later liaised and worked with contractors David Smith, Martin Adcock and Leigh Croft to plant up highways and develop similar perennial displays that I called Sustainable Perennial Displays that included Drought Tolerant genus.
In March 1999 George asked me to meet and find out what was challenging The Friends of Norwich in Bloom and support, I did this mostly voluntary up until the end of 2016 when I needed more time to support my elderly frail mother. FNIB Chairman Bill Webster introduced me to City Centre Management Partnership Carolyn Dunn who wanted to sponsor Prince of Wales Road and helped encourage many business to sponsor roundabouts and highways.
Late 1990's I started to learn DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY skills taking images of Roundabout, Traffic Island and Sponsorship Sites and Friends of Norwich in Bloom Activities and Events together with my friend and colleague Martin Henry Allotment Officer we printed large promotional photos and created a set of promotional display boards and information leaflets encouraging roundabout and highway sponsorship and support for The Friends of Norwich in Bloom.
In 1999 I met up with my good friend John Attoe who started to teach horticulture at Norwich Training Workshop I asked if John and his students would like to take delivery of Cannas from the summer bedding displays in September to over winter and grow on as part of the students coursework so we could use the plants again in June 2000, that was the start of a 20 year partnership with City College Norwich, Producing Civic and Community Plants.
In 2000 I met for interview EDP garden writer Antony King-Deacon for an article called In A Roundabout Way, Antony asked for a roundabout photograph, I supplied a photo of Grapes Hill Roundabout I designed and organised planting using Palms, Eucalyptus, Midland Roses and annual bedding, Antony liked MY PHOTOGRAPHY asking if I had any more he could use for his writings, I supplied around 100 photographs used most Saturdays until Antony sadly died in 2005.
In 2002 Astutech supported me by creating my first www.norwichinbloom.co.uk website, my friend Jeff Taylor helped and taught me to create web pages and develop the website further, I am currently rebuilding past and new pages like this page, in my retirement I am aiming to develop my Norwich In Bloom website as an archive.
In 2003 Bill Webster and Carolyn Dunn visited HM Prison Services Norwich to look at redundant greenhouses and polythene tunnels to ask if plants could be grown by inmates and staff for Norwich sheltered housing schemes.
In 2004 Floranova became partners donating flower and vegetable seeds for civic and community projects.
In 2004 Barford Van Hire became a partner supplying a van to help deliver plants grown at HM Norwich Prison Norwich for community projects and later a mini bus for City College Norwich to transport plants and students to community plantings sites.
In 2005 Godfrey DIY Superstore donated compost and goods as part of a contra deal to advertise at Ketts Hill Roundabout helping to sustain and increase production of plants at Norwich Prison Services and City College Norwich.
In 2006 I met Mark Baker from CREATIVE IMAGE MANAGEMENT (C.I.M.) who were better value and provided a complete design and installation service for all advertisers using the Norwich in Bloom scheme. Mark cared about the environmental campaign donating lots of time and free products/service to the initiative until the scheme finished on 31st March 2020, it was through Mark and his network and friendship that sponsorship and support doubled over the years. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY DISPAYS - CITY WIDE SERVICES TEAM 2006 - 2010 As Greens Spaces disbanded new Parks Teams and City Wide Services Teams were created, I was transferred into City Wide Services and continued as Horticultural Officer under manager David Mingay, based in St. Giles House, St. Giles Street opposite City Hall, I still managed Sponsorship, Pesticide, Feritliser and Invasive Weed Management and gave horticultural advise to Contract Officer colleagues.
At a higher management level disappointingly I was asked not to support Friends of Norwich in Bloom or attend any Anglia in Bloom meetings/events during work time, I complied but continued supporting and helping Friends of Norwich in Bloom voluntarily during evenings and weekends and took holiday/leave to attend Anglia in Bloom meetings and events.
2007 was perhaps the busiest Norwich in Bloom year for me as Bill Webster encouraged me to become the next Chair of Norwich in Bloom, I was also elected to Chair of Anglia in Bloom, Bill became Ambassador of Norwich and Anglia in Bloom, we continued to spend much time together at events and planning Friends of Norwich In Bloom Future.
Feeling unwell in 2007/8 I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic which made me careful about when and what I ate to prevent hypoglycaemia as I worked very long days both career and voluntary, this limited what I could achieve in many ways but I did my best to encourage, help and support all who asked me for support, I had to learn to manage diabetes. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY DISPAYS - COMMUNITIES and NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM SOUTH 2010 - 2016 In March 2010 my job was split into 2 days Horticultural and Funding Officer and 3 days job share Contract Officer in one of 4 neighbourhood offices across the city, I moved from St. Giles House to the South Neighbourhood Team based at Lakenham Area Housing Officer.
I was not happy working in this regime but made new work friends and carried on cheerily, the South Neighbourhood and each Neighbourhood Team consisted of a Manager, a Contract Officer, a Community Officer and 6 Neighbourhood Wardens. Lakenham Area Housing Office, Mansfield Lane was very convenient for me as my Mum lived close by, I was able to see and support my Mum during lunchtimes on my way to work and home.
In 2010 I was told there would be No Budget To Contract Purchase Annual Bedding Plants and Bulbs but still to attract sponsorship and funding from highway Roundabouts, Traffic Islands and Barrier Basket Displays, I suggested H M Prison Services Norwich and City College Norwich could grow and supply more bedding plants instead if funding generated from sponsorship could be used to buy production materials for the partnership. The partnership worked successfully but by 2013 I could see it would be better to plan plant production of Sustainable and Drought Tolerant Perennials to gradually replace annual bedding, I worked closely with Martin Adcock and Leigh Croft from contractor Norwich Norse to determine genus, species and varieties that would provide colour and interest over a long period, spring bulbs were purchased, planted and left to naturalise.
In 2013 further changes happened, 8 Contract Officers were needed and 9 people were in post, I was able to leave and become "Semi-retired" working just 2 days a week as Horticultural and Funding Officer.
In 2013 as a temporary display on St. Stephens Roundabout I used a mixture of Little Carpet Mixed hardy Annuals from Moles Seeds, the mainly California Poppies (Eschscholzia californica) display were so popular with the public that my original plan to use sustainable perennials did not happened, different seed mixes were added over the years including wildflower poppies and cornflowers in remembrance of those lost their lives in the Great War.
In 2014 through The Friends of Norwich in Bloom Chris Southgate and myself made a RHS DEFRA Grant Application to grow Sustainable Perennials in partnership and at City College Norwich and Hockering Nursery using Peat Free Compost of the £100,000 available we were successful receiving £14,300 over a 2 year period. One of Terry's favourite sustainable perennial displays including seed grown Armeria Joystick was at Cattle Market Street seen by many pedestrians and vehicle users heading into the Castle Mall.
In August 2015 all 4 Neighbourhood Managers, 4 Community Officers and myself relocated to City Hall in one crowded office, often there was not enough desks to work from so I had to look somewhere else to work from. |

ROUNDABOUT and HIGHWAY DISPAYS - NEIGHBOURHOODS ENABLING TEAM 2016 - 31st MARCH 2020 In 2016 all 4 Neighbourhood Managers were replaced by 1 Enabling Team Manager Kate Price, I was supported and felt valued again, I was encouraged to continue and develop my role generating funding, partnerships and community enabling, I really enjoyed working under the new regime.
In 2017 John Attoe, Sarah Softley (City College Norwich), Pam Frost and myself through the City Council Enabling Team formed a plan to grow perennials from seed with community groups and individuals, we called the project GROWING COMMUNITIES PARTNERSHIPS seed, trays and compost were purchased by myself through sponsorship income funds, volunteers choose packets of seed they collected from City College Norwich on 31st January 2018. The project ran until Summer 2021 when John Attoe and Sarah Softley retired from City College Norwich, I very mulched enjoying working in partnership with my good friend John for over 20 years and later Sarah, we all stay in touch and talk plants in our retirement as do many of my past working friends and colleagues - Horticulture is For Life. More about the project can be read by clicking on the link GROWING COMMUNITIES PARTNERSHIPS.
By 2018 all but 2 highway displays had been changed from a mixture of annual bedding and sustainable to all Sustainable and Drought Tolerant Displays, Golden Ball Street was sponsored and maintained by Norwich Norse Environmental staff and Ipswich Road Junction sponsored and maintained by Notcutts staff both mostly featured Geranium (Pelargonium zonale), Cineraria maritima Silver Dust and Verbena venosa in the summer displays with Floranova donated seeds and Polyanthus Crescendo in the spring displays all grown at City College Norwich.
In 2018 highway and roundabout sponsorship changed from the "Norwich in Bloom Scheme" to "Blooms For Norwich Scheme" a new logo based on my interest and historical Earlham Park Crocosmia breeding was created.
Each year The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor or/and Sheriff of Norwich would visit City College Norwich to meet and thank the students, staff and volunteers for producing plants in the greenhouses for civic and community displays, the last visit was in 2019 to see photos click THE RIGHT WORSHIPFUL LORD MAYORS VISIT TO CITY COLLEGE 2019
Early in 2020 although working as part of the Neighbourhoods Enabling Team I was told I was part of Norwich City Council's Highway Team! sadly Norwich City Council Management planned my transfer to Norfolk County Council to manage roundabout advertising to generate funds for Norfolk County Council, I had meetings and email correspondence with Norfolk County Council who told me there would be no funds or community involvement to help manage and keep highway displays as they had been with Norwich City Council, I decided after working my entire career nearly 44 years with Norwich City Council, it was best for me to leave and Fully Retire! On The 31st March 2020. |

My first memories of the Base of the Castle Mound long flower bed at Castle Meadow was of Sidney Lovewell, Foreman of the Castle and Churchyards Team planting Tulips amongst Wallflowers in autumn 1976, the long flower bed was removed and grassed over in 1997.
The Dr Harrington Wyndham Darrell Memorial Horse Trough adjacent to the long flower bed (originally from Ber Street) was planted with annual bedding and hanging basket plants.
Works around 1990 at Castle Meadow created a raised annual bedding display at the Entrance To Castle Gardens until around 2007 when the entrance from Castle Meadow was redeveloped.
The 2 Central Reservation Flower Beds were well seen as passengers waited for their transport, they were popular and sponsored by the local Norwich bus company until removed through road development in 2007.
In 2003 around 30,000 Crocus corms were planted at Castle Meadow by volunteers with my good friend and at the time Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Norwich Chris Southgate in the shape and colours of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Logo helping raise awareness and funds for the research charity, my good friend Caroline Jenkinson helped plant the corms and wrote a press article, the Crocus appeared for a number of years. |

IPSWICH ROAD - DANIELS ROAD JUNCTION |
One of my favourite Norwich highway flower beds, being born just down the road in Tuckswood it brought back fond memories as a child walking to the city centre with my Mum and brothers, it was once the Tuckswood Roundabout having 4 outside and one central flower bed similar to most roundabouts, the road layout was changed in the 1990's into a junction with traffic lights and railing crossings later having Amberol Barrier Basket displays.
In 1997 and 1998 Hardy Annual Bohemian Rhapsody seeds were sown into this flower bed.
2000 was a popular, interesting marvelled summer display of Begonia semperflorens and Lobelia Crystal Palace.
In 2004 two of the crossing beds were replanted by Notcutts using shrubs, the Daniels Road continued as annual bedding, Notcutts sponsor signs were placed in all 3 flower/shrub beds.
Until 2020 there were some nice annual bedding displays which I would look at and photograph whilst walking past twice a day during my semi-retirement from 2015 until 2020 on my way to work at City Hall and popping into City College Norwich on route to see John Attoe, Sarah Softley, staff and students and the thousands of plants they grew for voluntary and civic bedding and sustainable displays including Ipswich/Daniels Road Junction Flower Bed.
When the annual bedding plants were ready in late May and again October, Notcutts Manage Nick Budgen and staff would collect the plants from City College Norwich plant up the flower bed and maintain throughout the year, It was one of the most enjoyable partnerships I worked on during my career.
Geranium, Verbena venosa, Cineraria maritima Silver Dust and Canna were always the favourite plants for summer use, the Geranium seed being donated by Floranova at Foxley, Norfolk, Polyanthus Crescendo plug plants from Earley Ornamentals and Tulips were favoured for the spring displays. |
