During 2021 Terry began studying and photographing Hoverflies at The Dell most days from March until November posting photos to UK Hoverflies Facebook to ask identification and record as part of the national study.

Terry was always interested in Hoverflies throughout his horticultural career, reading text books and learning about at the NORFOLK COLLEGE OF HORTICULTURE and through specialist B.A.S.I.S. TRAINING, not all but many Hoverfly larvae eat Aphids, a natural control to encourage in your garden, parks and fields, Hoverflies are also a valued pollinator of plants.

"I did not realise how many different types of Hoverfly there are, around 270 species in the UK, I could see some were different as they visited flowers at The Dell as I photographed blossom and Bees feeding from Leucanthemum vulgare (Ox-Eyed Daisy) naturalised on our Dry Bank, there were so many Eristalis tenax (Drone Hoverfly) with Bees a few years ago, photographing Chives I noticed a "Mimic Bee" Volucella bombylans, feeding from Eryngium giganteum Miss Willmotts Ghost I would often see Sphaerophoria scripta (Long Hoverfly), on Crocosmia Episyrphus balteatus (Marmalade Hoverfly), on Hardy Geranium the beautiful Helophilus pendulus (Tiger or Sun Bather Hoverfly), the large and scary "Mimic Hornet" Volucella zonaria and this year I have noticed the very friendly Mayothropa florea (Batman Hoverfly)"

At The Dell so far Terry has photographed and submited for professional identification 33 different Hoverflies within 17 Genus, a current list  showing dates recorded and plants/flowers observed on can be seen at the bottom of this page.

I am no expert but keen and interested in Hoverflies I am a professional retired horticulturalist/gardener

This webpage is intended to show plants that Hoverflies feed from and rest on at The Dell, as yet I have not noticed or photographed larvae but have joined UK Hoverflies Larval Group Facebook to learn about and search for in 2022.

Managed Ivy On Oak Tree Provides Valuable Food

and Habitat - The Dell November 2021

HOVERFLY FAVOURED FLOWERS and PLANTS AT THE DELL BY MONTH

The Dell is just over one acre split into ten separate garden areas, Hoverflies can be found in all areas, Box Garden, Dry Bank, Grass and Pond Garden, Perennial Border, Vegetable and Cut Flower Garden, Sundial Garden, Summerhouse Garden, Wildlife Garden, Herb Border Area, Greenhouses and Cold Frame Area, Container Displays and in The Dell especially on and around Ivy (Hedera) growing on our mature old Oak Tree and as groundcover.

Perhaps thought of as a nuisance Ivy is a valuable food source providing pollen and nectar during the autumn and winter months, Hoverflies feed from the small flowers, Holly Blue Butterfly Caterpillars eat the buds, Ivy is also a valuable shelter for native wildlife.

Considering how best to show plants that Hoverflies favour I am showing photos of Hoverfly and plant by month and aim to add more photos to this page in the future as I take and build up stock photos.

Most of the photographs shown on this page are taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC5 using a Macro lens, polarising filter and flash, all are hand held using as high F stop as possible to get as much detail where possible - Not Easy!

 WINTER - January

On the last day of January 2022 I spotted the first Hoverflies, Eristalis tenax I have ever seen and photographed in the Winter in our Box garden, importantly the 3 females were pollinating Winter Aconites.

A few hours later I spotted just one Eristalis tenax female sunbathing on a south facing concrete fence post in our Grass and Pond Garden.

 SPRING - March

During late March 2021 I was not particularly searching for Hoverflies but spotted a Male Cheilosia species whilst photographing Narcissi in flower, talking to Mirelle I decided to photograph and make a study of the types of Hoverflies at The Dell for the rest of 2021.

2022 I intend to search, photograph and record Hoverflies to add to this web page and to get a better understanding of plants favoured and areas of habitat.

 SPRING - May

May is a month of floral abundance at The Dell, hundreds of Forget Me Not, Primrose and Red Campion growing in in various plantings feed and sustain Hoverflies.

One of my favourite places to sit, watch and photograph Hoverflies and Bees is in The Vegetable and Cut Flower Garden along the Chives (Allium spaerocephalum) Oval Pottage border edge. Hundreds of Bees visit the many purple flowers in a circular fashion often accompanied by Bee mimic Hoverfly Volucella bombylans and Merodon equestris, Hoverflies particularly like Alliums.

 SUMMER - June

Leucanthemum vulgare (Ox-Eyed Daisy) is a easy must grow perennial that attracts and sustains so many insects in May and June including different Genus/species of Hoverfly, we grow hundreds on our sloping Dry Bank. Predatory Spiders know many insects visit Leucanthemum blending in with the white petals to pounce on their prey.

Hardy Geranium varieties in perennial borders and as groundcover under Magnolias attract Hoverflies.

Found our first Eupeodes resting on Hazel Red Cracker.

 SUMMER - July

Eryngium giganteum Miss Willmotts Ghost (Sea Holly) is a easy must grow biennial attracting and sustaining many insects including Bees, Butterflies, Swollen Thighed Beetle, Long Horned Beetle and Hoverflies. Eryngium's spread their selves by seed each year in different places, I spend many hours sitting and photographing visiting insects.

Anemone, Geranium, Hemerocallis, Scabiosa and Tanacetum (Feverfew) attract Hoverflies, 4 different Volucella species regularly seen feeding and resting.

 SUMMER - August

Origanum marjorana (Majoram) is a must grow perennial herb Bees, Butterflies and Hoverflies constantly feed from during mid to late summer. Mirelle grows hundreds along path edges in the Perennial Border and Vegetable Garden, I spend hours watching and photographing.

Allium tuberosum, Anemone, Geranium, Helenium and Verbena bonariensis attract many Hoverflies Genus including Episyrphus, Eristalis, Helophilus, Melanostoma, Myathropa, Platycheirus, Rhingia, Sphaerophoria and Volucella. Xylota race around leaves.

  AUTUMN - September

Allium tuberosum (Garlic or Chinese Chives) is a must grow perennial herb Bees, Butterflies and Hoverflies feed from during mid to late summer, Mirelle grows about a hundred along path edges in the Vegetable Garden.

Autumn flowering Actaea, Aster (Michaelmas Daisy), Dahlia, Helenium, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Verbena bonariensis and Zinnia attract and sustain Hoverflies as well as long flowering Hardy Geraniums.

Many Hoverflies enjoy resting on un open Sedum flowers.

 AUTUMN - October

At The Dell during October we have many plants that continue to flower until the first hard frosts including Aconitum, Argyanthemum, Aster, Bulbine (Burnt Jelly), Chrysanthemum, Crocus (Autumn Flowering), Hardy Geraniums, Helenium, Rudbeckia, Salvia, Verbena bonariensis and even Passiflora caerulea all helping to sustain Hoverflies.

Many Hoverflies seem to be "Sunbathing" especially on south facing foliage and stems, Cornus Baton rouge, Eounymus, Magnolia soulangeana and Vitis (Grape), leaves of Hardy Geraniums and nearby trunk of Prunus serrulata Kanzan are a favourite area of Myathropa florea as well as my hand and dark blue fleece!

 AUTUMN - November

Less flowers in November but Hardy Geranium Rozanne, Scabiosa Kingfischer Blue, Salvia Amistad and Verbena bonariensis, Viburnum x bodantense sustaining Hoverflies.

Every other day I visit a mature Oak on a steep bank adjacent to our Summer House Garden to photograph many and different Genus and species feeding from Ivy (Hedera) flowers as well as lots of flies.

Hoverflies continue to sunbath on south facing foliage showing autumn colour and near to falling, our south facing walls and windows also attract sunbathers.
